HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

During the early days, the place was said to be a virgin forest, full of gigantic trees, shrubs and bushes. The people wanted to clear the area slowly by cutting the big trees first. The gradual process of clearing the area was called “tastas” in local term. Hence, the place was called “Tastas.”

A fiesta is celebrated every 9th day of June in honor of their patron saint, Sacred Heart of Jesus.


Physical Characteristics

Tastas belongs to the upland unit barangay in the City of Ligao, 3rd District of Albay. It is bounded on the East and North by Barangay Pandan; on the West by Barangay Ranao-Ranao; and on the South by Barangay Oma-Oma.

Tastas has a total land area of 306.40 hectares (ha). It lies at the foot of a mountain. The Barangay is classified as Upland and has a population of 2,041 where 1,033 are male and 1,008 are female. It has an average household size of 4. Major source of livelihood is Farming.

It has a tropical climate. Heavy rainfall occurs during the months of June to November and the dry season is from the month of January to May.


Educational Health and Service Facilities

Tastas has one (1) Day Care Center which is supervised by skilled Day Care Workers, one (1) public elementary school which caters the primary and intermediate pupils under the supervision of Department of Education (DepEd) schools district. The nearest secondary school and Nearest College or Vocational Schools is 2.2 kilometers from the barangay proper.

The barangay has one (1) health center manned by two (2) barangay health workers and one (1) barangay nutrition scholar assigned to take charge in the implementation and monitoring of various health programs and services such as maternal and health care which includes family planning, nutrition, and immunization of children below five (5) years old and two (2) Utility Workers. Other service facilities include Barangay Outpost, Barangay Hall, Barangay Covered Court.


Mode of Public Transportation

In Barangay Tastas, the mode of transportation is tricycle and habal-habal.


Credit Institutions

The barangay has 3 credit institutions namely ASA, SAC and ARDCI.


Water & Electric Supply

One Hundred Twenty four (124) households or 26.4% has no access to potable drinking water. Residents get their source from their own use faucet, community water system; shared faucet, and own use tubed/pipe deep well and protected spring. Electricity for the barangay is provided by Albay Power and Energy Corporation (APEC).


Waste Management

379 households or 80.64% of the total households from the barangay are practicing burning of garbage while 86 households or 18.3% are practicing garbage composting, 88 households or 18.72% practiced garbage segregation. The barangay is on its process of enhancing its capacity in implementing the RA 9003. They are on the process on implementation of various environmental ordinances as well as currently practicing the “segregation at source” and have established their own material recovery facility.


Peace and Order

There are ten (10) Barangay Tanods (with 1 Female) appointed by the Punong Barangay who maintain the stable peace and order situation by conducting a nightly patrol.  They are receiving monthly honorarium from the barangay budget.
